Volunteerism is ingrained in our community. We appreciate the tremendous work our community volunteers do for our City. Join us in honoring Sammamish's 2021 Volunteers of the Year.
Since 1986, Joyce has been a resident of Sammamish. Her volunteerism spans decades, including more than 60 years with the American Red Cross. Locally, Joyce has been part of the Sammamish Rotary since 2006, holding numerous roles, including President and Club Secretary. She is a CERT-trained volunteer. A founding member of the Sammamish Seniors group, her service is a vital role in its success.
In 2021, alone, her outstanding dedication was displayed by volunteering 1,416 hours for the Sammamish Seniors group. Joyce actively puts the group’s newsletters together, conducts outreach and programming. She was part of the Human Services Task Force in 2015 and transitioned to Human Services Commission member when it was first created in 2018. She currently serves as the Chair.
Joyce will also receive The President’s Lifetime Achievement Award for her lifelong commitment to building a stronger nation through volunteer service. With such a long and distinguished career, Sammamish is truly lucky to have Joyce.
Steve is the volunteer manager for the City’s Native Plant Nursery. The nursery provides plants for all volunteer planting events, the WNPS stewardship program, and all Sammamish steward sites. He organizes and participates in plant salvage to ensure trees and native shrubs can be transplanted to an area, where they will not be disturbed.
Steve designed and created pollinator gardens in the City. Three of which are finished and two more are planned. His vast knowledge of native plants and the creation of pollinator gardens, in compromised areas and varying environments, is a tremendous asset to the community. Steve participates in habitat restoration projects at all Sammamish parks. A helpful leader at these events – Steve shares knowledge from his long career of managing a fish hatchery to his passion for botany with all.
Always going above and beyond, Steve frequently develops a planting plan showing each species niche zone and organizes the plant giveaway for Earth Day. Over the years, Sammamish has benefited tremendously from the work and knowledge Steve gives freely.
