Beaver Lake Preserve
|
The vision for Beaver Lake Preserve was set at the time of the purchase of the property
by the city of Sammamish and is documented in the Declaration of Protective Covenants
for the property. To paraphrase, this document declares that: The Beaver Lake Natural
Area Preserve property shall be retained forever in its open space and natural condition.
The natural features shall be reasonably maintained and stewarded with the highest
priority given to the protection of the native plants and animals that reside on
and visit the Preserve. Through passive recreation, such as hiking and bird watching,
the public shall be able to enjoy the Preserve and learn about Northwest forest
and wetland systems from observing the natural workings of this intact habitat.
The community shall be an active participant in the stewardship of the Preserve.

Goals
- Protect, Enhance and Restore Wetlands, Forest habitat, and Lakeshore habitat
- Protect all habitat and species in the Laughing Jacobs Creek Watershed
- Protect soil stability on site, surface waters from pollution, and water quality
of Beaver Lake
- Allow public access and enjoyment of site natural features
- Discourage use of the Preserve as a trailhead for Soaring Eagle Park
Timeline
Phase one scheduled opening: Summer 2006.
Contractor
There will be a mixed approach. Washington Trails Association will be building trails
and the parking lot is tentatively scheduled to be installed by our in-house team.
Cost Estimates
Phase one: approximately $800,000 which includes building 1.3 miles of trail, a
parking lot for 10 cars, entry sign, regulatory signs, some minimal site furniture,
and a site for a sani-can.
Public Involvement
A design steering committee was formed in February and continued in the development
process of the management plan and including members of Beaver Lake Community Club
and the Beaver Lake Management District. A public meeting took place in July.
Permits, environmental review
SEPA currently in process.
Environmental factors
Requirements to restore and enhance the site were set forth in the Declaration of
Protective Covenants at the time the site was purchased. The Beaver Lake Preserve
contains a variety of features including wetlands, forests and lakeshore habitat.
