July 19, 2011 - Construction Begins!
Boys & Girls Clubs of King County has teamed up with Andersen Construction to complete the interior renovation of the Sammamish EX3 Teen and Recreation Center. The renovation is scheduled to begin on July 18 and is expected to be completed within sixty days. The EX3 (which stands for ‘Explore, Experience, Excite’) Teen and Recreation Center will consist of a technology lab, teaching kitchen, performance stage, games room, study space, multi-purpose room, and a future gymnasium. The facility will also be available for community use during school hours.
Boys & Girls Clubs of King County partnered with the City of Sammamish in 2010 to convert the former library on 228th Avenue NE into an EX3 Teen and Recreation Center to be operated by the Redmond/Sammamish Boys & Girls Club. With Boys & Girls Clubs EX3 Teen Centers providing much-needed services in Federal Way, Rainier Valley, and Mercer Island, the Sammamish facility looks to make a similar impact on the Plateau.
“We are so thankful to the City of Sammamish for recognizing the community’s need for an EX3 Teen and Recreation Center”, said Redmond/Sammamish Boys & Girls Club Executive Director Jane Ronngren. “We have more than 6,000 teens living in the Sammamish area, and providing a place where teens are able to explore new challenges, experience new opportunities, and get excited about their skills, interests, and most importantly, their futures, is critical to our community. Last month over 1,200 teens attended our fourth annual Teen Fest in partnership with the City, clearly demonstrating the need for an EX3 Teen and Recreation Center.”
The organization has raised more than $1 million for the renovation from individual, foundation, and corporate gifts including a leadership contribution from Microsoft. The Boys & Girls Club will also embark on a Community Campaign to raise funds for operating costs. The Community Campaign will consist of appeals to area families, businesses, and community groups.
“The Sammamish community has waited so long for this to happen. We are grateful for their patience and confident they will be a part of this amazing opportunity”, said Ronngren. “We will soon be offering regularly scheduled public tours so that the community can experience first-hand the future of its youth and teens.”
